Temporary Event Lighting: A Safe Setup Checklist

October 30, 2026

Temporary event lighting should be planned like any other electrical installation. The equipment may only be in place for a short time, but the same risks remain: overloaded circuits, damaged cords, wet connections, trip hazards, poor light placement, and unsafe shutdown procedures.

Confirm the electrical load before setup

Start with the wattage and voltage of every fixture, then identify the available circuits and their ratings. Lighting should be divided across properly protected circuits with enough capacity for startup and continuous operation. Existing receptacles and extension cords should never be assumed to handle the full event load.

Use equipment rated for the location

Protect walkways and exits

Cables should be routed away from doors, stairs, accessible paths, and emergency exits. Where cables must cross a walking or driving surface, use appropriate cable ramps or overhead routing. Lighting equipment should also be secured so it cannot tip, shift, or block required clearances.

Aim the lights before guests arrive

Good event lighting improves visibility without creating glare for drivers, neighbors, performers, or guests. Test the layout after dark when possible, confirm that entrances and work areas are evenly illuminated, and keep heat-producing fixtures away from combustible material.

Plan the shutdown and removal

Assign one person to control energizing and shutdown. After the event, allow equipment to cool, disconnect power safely, inspect for damage, and remove cables before temporary barriers or security controls are taken down. A simple setup and removal checklist prevents missed equipment and unsafe energized connections.

For a safe temporary lighting plan, One & Done Electric can review the available power, circuit loading, equipment placement, weather exposure, and removal sequence.
